Solving Interoperability challenges in Healthcare systems using FHIR

Many healthcare providers, today, use minimal analytics and have ineffective, siloed data handling practices that inhibit interoperability and prevent them from accurately utilizing patient data. With Data and Analytics becoming deciding factors for competitive edge in every industry, Healthcare organizations will need to embrace Advanced Analytics and move to highly patient-centric practices to stay ahead of their game. Healthcare providers need to adopt a data virtualization platform that seamlessly integrates across all their data sources and platforms to provide actionable insights.

The Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource, commonly known as FHIR, is a protocol used for joining disparate systems together and holds great promise for the development of an application-based approach to interoperability and health information exchange.

There are three steps that are involved in developing a framework that uses interoperability to provide empowering services to patients:

Step 1:

Hosting FHIR services on Mashery:

TIBCO’s Connected Integration Platform uses the FHIR servers on Mashery to host several APIs such as Patient API, Billing API and Practitioner API and build lightweight applications. Through these APIs the platform can receive information such as practitioner details and corresponding patient information including specifics such as health care history, contact details, test results etc. This information can then be deployed by the healthcare provider through FIHR to share with other hospitals in the ecosystem or through Flogo to inform patients using IOT devices.

Mashery is an API platform that delivers key API management capabilities needed for successful digital transformation initiatives. API management enables developers that publish or consume an API to monitor the interface lifecycle and ensure that the API is performing as it was designed. Mashery can help you transform your APIs into products, define and manage your community of API consumers and provide a single point of API access for internal or external developers. TIBCO’s Mashery has the ability to seamlessly host FHIR APIs and enhance their implementation to build applications easily and quickly.

Please see this link for an example on how several APIs can be hosted on Mashery to build and maintain applications

TIBCO’s capabilities can transform the field of healthcare and change its orientation to being patient centric where the patient is in charge of the services and data such as billing information, test results etc without being dependent on the care provider

Step 2:

Building connected applications using TCI:

Building integration applications using TCI that connect to various reusable FHIR resources that are easily extendable such as billing, practitioner, patient and insurance resources. These resources are then used to establish connectivity with the FHIR server and build workflows that the organization needs and provide services that can be exposed to other applications on the cloud that can consume these web resources and delegates work as needed.

Watch the attached video to find out how we have used TCI to connect different FHIR end points across the cloud.

Step 3:

Using IOT based devices to provide services to patients:

The information accessed through the APIs such as the records of patients, practitioners and payers in an organization can then be sent to an underlying flogo application which converts the information it receives into speech and reads out received Patient information & Lab report results from the Raspberry PI device directly.

View the attached demo for an example on how the text to speech conversion can be carried out through the raspberry PI device.

Conclusion:

TIBCO Connected Intelligence platform enables both Payers and Providers to incorporate these FHIR resources into their ecosystem seamlessly. Using the platform’s dynamic capabilities, hospitals and healthcare centres across the healthcare ecosystem can interoperably exchange and use information about patient’s previous medical history to provide patient centric, contextual services.

This information can not only help healthcare providers in the scientific evaluation of their patient profile to plan treatment protocols for future medical care but also analyze treatment details to provide results to patients using edge devices.

TIBCO Connected Intelligence Platform leverages FHIR APIs to manage the records of patients, practitioners and payers in an organization which can be accessed through a unified platform built on top of the underlying APIs. These records are then sent to an underlying flogo application which converts the information it receives into speech and reads out Patient information & Lab report results from the Raspberry PI device directly.
